My Story

About me and the studio

How I became The Artistic Lens

I’ve taken photographs for as long as I can remember. It all started when my Dad gave me his old Kodak Colorsnap 35 and I took holiday snaps on vibrant Kodacolor Gold film. The excitement, while waiting for the prints to arrive from the developers, was quite unforgettable! Having been immersed in the creative photography assignments and product photography of my design degree, I later embarked on a tour of Europe, accompanied by the Pentax P30n, which my parents had bought for my 21st birthday. Throughout the trip, having a great love of art, architecture and design, I aimed to capture as many famous landmarks and artworks as I could.

Soon afterwards, I met the young woman with whom I have the privilege to share my life, and began my career as a teacher. Alongside my teaching job, as a volunteer for the RSPB and British Trust for Ornithology, and having taken a degree in natural science, I spent many years photographing wildlife.

My passion for photographing people arose from taking photos of fellow musicians and over recent years (I play bass and guitar), this has developed into my enjoyment of street photography. I love to wander around the urban environment with my compact modern classic x100v. I have worked on a compilation of photographs, which document the impact of recent world-changing events in the small, yet world-famous northeast Yorkshire coastal town that I call home.

I have built up a considerable body of work, across a number of photographic genres, and have recently set up my studio in the centre of Whitby. For excellent image quality, I use high-quality lenses and my studio equipment is portable and easily set up at your home, workplace or other special location. In addition to carefully composing photographs, I use a range of post-production techniques to craft beautiful final outcomes. I look forward to working with you to provide images which you will cherish for many years to come.

Having worked in professional environments for nearly 30 years, I am committed to high standards of service. You can be assured that I will listen carefully to what you hope to achieve from your photographs, and that I will communicate and act in a timely manner to produce work that you and I can be proud of. I have enhanced DBS, relevant insurances and am an Associate Member of the Association of Photographers.

The Studio

My studio is in the centre of Whitby in a Grade II listed late-Georgian terrace, where we have lived for over 20 years. The high ceiling is perfect when using studio lighting and backdrops. With a south-facing aspect, it allows for lovely natural-light shooting through original Georgian windows and, when using studio lighting, the shutters may be closed if necessary. Originally a main reception room, the studio is large enough for photoshoots from individuals to small groups. The space is also suitable for commercial photography, such as for photographing ranges of clothing for websites. For portraiture, I have a selection of high-quality backdrops and seating to choose from and a range of lighting setups can be used to suit the mood and style of the images. Set high above the road, surrounded by picturesque churches and other gardens, The Artistic Lens has a uniquely secluded location in the jewel of the Yorkshire Coast.
